Rogers Pass

Rogers Pass, in Canada's Selkirk Mountains, has become a Mecca for those who want a true Canadian mountain skiing experience. I feel this is the best place to ski in early and mid-winter, with consistent snowfalls and cold temperatures to keep conditions prime. Later in the season the skiing is still great, with corn snow on south aspects and powder on the norths. I am guiding in this area regularly all winter.

All of my trips are based from the Glacier Park Lodge at the summit of the Pass. With a winter-long "skier's special" on rooms and meals, the hotel provides a comfortable and inexpensive base to explore the scores of nearby runs. A half-dozen major valleys are accessible from the hotel or in a few minutes' drive along the highway.

The skiing varies from 1200 meter long glacier runs from high passes to the valley bottom, to shorter 200-500 meter shots through the trees that we use on those days when it's snowing and visibility is poor at higher elevations. We can use a variety of aspects as well, and this helps us find good skiing and stable avalanche conditions. Famous runs include The Seven Steps of Paradise, Grizzly Shoulder, Sapphire Col, Bonney Trees and The Dome.

Guests generally provide their own ski touring equipment, either alpine touring gear or telemark gear. Also required are an avalanche beacon, a shovel and a probe. All of this gear is available to rent; contact me for more details.
